Homestead Capital makes 100 Best Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon list by Oregon Business Magazine
10/2/2009

PORTLAND, Ore. – Homestead Capital has been named as one of the 100 Best Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon. The Oregon Business Magazine compiles the list which focuses on employee benefits and compensation, overall work environment, performance management, and opportunities for career development and learning. Among the small organizations (less than 25 employees), Homestead Capital was ranked 19th.

“With more than 10,000 registered nonprofits in the State of Oregon, it is an honor to be named among the top 100,” said Tobias Washington, President of Homestead Capital. “Homestead’s success is driven by our excellent staff, an attractive benefits program, and an organizational culture which fosters professional development, empowered action, encouragement and growth. All these attributes combine to make Homestead a family.”

Those named to the 100 Best Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon list had to employ at least 10 employees, and every employee within the organization was required to complete an anonymous survey created by the Oregon Business Magazine. Homestead’s employee benefits were also scrutinized including more than 50 questions covering health and wellness, time off, family-friendly policies, work scheduling, incentives, retirement plans and culture. According to Robin Doussard, Editor of the Oregon Business Magazine, employees in the nonprofit survey assigned their highest importance ratings to: “treatment of employees by supervisors,” and “pride and belief in the organization.”

A sold-out banquet was held on September 29th at the Portland Art Museum announcing the results of the survey and celebrating those nonprofits which made the 100 Best list. The Honorable Barbara Roberts, Former Governor of the State of Oregon, gave the keynote address at the event, highlighting the important work that nonprofits do for the State.

Established in 1993, Homestead Capital has raised over $450 million to build more than 5,000 units of affordable housing for low-income people in the West. Homestead Capital works with communities to identify affordable housing needs and brings together developers and investors (banks, insurance companies and other corporations) to create housing through the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program established by Congress.
